The VFW annually provides more than $3.2 million a year in awards and scholarships for our nation's youth in grades 7 to 12. In the 2000-2001 program, more than 152,000 students participated in the various VFW scholarship programs. The Voice of Democracy is an annual national audio essay contest that is designed to foster patriotism by giving high school students in grades 9 through 12 the opportunity to voice their opinion about their personal obligations as an American and address their responsibility to our country. Created in 1947, the scholarship program annually provides more than $2.5 million in scholarships. Contestants write and record a three to five minute essay on an annual theme.

The purpose of The American Legion's National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
