National Veteran's History Project  http://www.loc.gov/folklife/vets
There are 19 million war veterans living in the United States today, but every day we lose 1,500 of them. Motivated by the urgent need to collect the stories and experiences of war veterans while they are still among us, the United States Congress created the Veterans History Project.

All Americans are encouraged to participate. By interviewing a veteran or war worker as part of the Veterans History Project, you honor those who served our nation during difficult and dangerous periods in our past.

The legislation calls upon the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to collect and preserve audio- and video-taped oral histories, along with documents such as letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and home movies, of America's war veterans and those who served in support of them during World War I, World War II, and the Korean, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf wars.

Teachers and students, participants in after-school programs, and youth groups may become Official Youth Partners. Please see the Partner Information Form and Youth Partner Information Form for further details.

Middle School Initiative  http://www.capmsi.com/index.cfm
This program places Civil Air Patrol squadrons or flights into middle schools during the day or as an after-school activity with the support/help from a local host CAP unit. This is an innovative attempt to reach students in a manner that teaches respect, manners and accountability while developing their potential as tomorrow's leaders. It is achieving growing success in both inner city and rural schools alike.

In the 2000-2001 program, more than 152,000 students participated in the various VFW scholarship programs. The Voice of Democracy is an annual national audio essay contest that is designed to foster patriotism by giving high school students in grades 9 through 12 the opportunity to voice their opinion about their personal obligations as an American and address their responsibility to our country. Created in 1947, the scholarship program annually provides more than $2.5 million in scholarships. Contestants write and record a three to five minute essay on an annual theme.
